Floris London Review 2026: Nine Generations of Perfume From Jermyn Street

Picture a narrow shop on London's Jermyn Street, mahogany cabinets glowing under soft light, and a perfumer blending oils in a back room where his father and grandfather once stood. You lift a blotter to your nose: a flash of nutmeg, then sandalwood and vetiver settling in like a well-cut wool coat. That is the world of Floris London, a family perfumer that has been scenting the same street since 1730 and now ships its fragrances to the U.S. through its American store.

We went through Floris London's U.S. site, its fragrance families, prices and policies in October 2026. Here's what you get, which bottle suits which person, and how to try Floris without committing to a full $270 bottle on day one.

The Story: Nine Generations on Jermyn Street

According to the brand's history page, founder Juan Famenias Floris and his wife Elizabeth began selling perfume, combs and shaving products in London's St James's quarter. The shop they opened at 89 Jermyn Street is still the heart of the business, and it is still run by their descendants today.

The timeline reads like a who's-who of British history. Floris received its first Royal Warrant in 1820 as comb maker to King George IV. The Spanish mahogany cabinets bought at the Great Exhibition of 1852 still stand in the shop. Floris keeps a letter from Florence Nightingale thanking "Mr Floris" for his "beautiful sweet-smelling nosegays," a 1934 receipt for Winston Churchill's Stephanotis, and a 1959 receipt for Rose Geranium bought for Marilyn Monroe. Ian Fleming was a regular customer and wrote Floris into his 1955 novel Moonraker.

The craft hasn't left the family either. Edward Bodenham, Floris's 9th-generation perfumery director, puts it simply: "We compose our fragrances in London in the same room my father did, and his father before him."

What Makes Floris Different

  • A handwritten archive. Floris says its founder recorded his first formula in a leather-bound book, and that book and the formulas that followed are still kept in the perfumery at 89 Jermyn Street. Today's creations draw on that archive.
  • Made in Britain. The brand describes its fragrances as made in Britain by an in-house perfumery team, using sustainably sourced absolutes and essential oils from long-serving suppliers.
  • Single-note thinking. Many compositions are built around one central note, such as neroli, bergamot, oud or rose, so each scent has a clear personality you can recognise across a room.
  • Old-school bath details. The 100g luxury soaps are hand wrapped, finely milled, made with a vegetable base and shea butter, and stamped with a mould Floris says dates from the early 1800s.

The practical upshot? You're not buying a celebrity launch that disappears in a year. Many Floris scents, like Stephanotis and Rose Geranium, have been on the shelf for generations, so you can rebuy your signature for years.

The Lineup: Find Your Floris Scent

Most Floris fragrances come in four sizes, so you can start tiny and scale up once you're sure. The FAQ explains the price gap: Eau de Parfum holds a greater percentage of fragrance oils than Eau de Toilette, so it costs more but you need less of it.

No. 89: the gentleman's classic

Floris describes No. 89 as a classic, elegant cologne: a touch of spicy nutmeg, a floral heart, then a woody base of sandalwood, cedarwood and vetiver. It's the scent James Bond's creator favoured, and the brand notes this Eau de Toilette is vegan. Buy this if you want one confident bottle that works with a suit or a sweater.

Neroli Voyage: sunshine in a bottle

This Eau de Parfum opens with neroli and lemon plus marine notes, moves into jasmine, ginger and fennel seed, and dries down to oak wood, musk and amber. Floris says it was inspired by a letter Robert Floris wrote home while sourcing ingredients abroad. Buy this if you like bright citrus that still feels grown-up after dark.

Edwardian Bouquet: for floral romantics

Bergamot, mandarin and hyacinth up top; jasmine, rose and ylang ylang in the heart; amber, musk, oakmoss and patchouli underneath. Buy this if you want a full, old-world bouquet rather than a single soft flower.

Not sure yet? Start with the Sample Set

The Sample Set is a box of 2ml vials designed so you can find your favourite before choosing a full bottle. On the U.S. homepage, Floris says buying a Sample Set earns you $30 off a full-size 100ml purchase, which makes it the smartest first step for most shoppers.

Floris London FAQ

Is Floris London still family-run?

Yes. Floris says the shop at 89 Jermyn Street is still run by descendants of founder Juan Famenias Floris, and its perfumery director is from the 9th generation.

What's the difference between Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette?

Floris explains that Eau de Parfum contains a greater percentage of fragrance oils, which is why it costs more and why you need less of it for the same effect.

Can I return a perfume I've opened?

No. The U.S. returns policy accepts only unopened products in original packaging within 28 days of delivery, unless an item arrives damaged or defective.

Does the U.S. store ship everywhere in America?

It ships within the U.S. with free standard shipping over $150, but not to PO Boxes, Puerto Rico, Guam and several other territories, or to Canada.

Our Verdict

Floris London sells something few brands can: a scent with nearly 300 years of family history behind it, composed in the same London room for generations. Prices sit firmly in luxury territory, but the four-size system and the Sample Set make it easy to fall in love before you spend big. Pick a 10ml or a sample, find your signature, then check our Floris London deals page before you order the full bottle.
